Shutter Island Soars at Box Office

Shutter Island which was pulled out of the fall release in 2009 arrived in theaters on Friday and was No. 1 at the North American box office.

Fall of 2009 this R-rated feature was pulled from release by a cost cutting Paramount pictures. Hollywood was surprised at the delay especially since the director was the one and only Martin Scorsese.

Paramount studio says they simply couldn't afford to realese the movie in the fourth quarter because of an industry wide decline in DVD sales, among other financial concerns.

Scorsese nor Leonardo Decaprio, the films main character, has had an opening this big in quite a while. In fact its been eight years since Decaprio's "Catch me if you Can", his previously biggest open.

I saw the film this weekend and was absolutely amazed. There are no words to describe how amazing this film was. Scorsese keeps you on edge and thinking the entire time. I felt as if I was in the movie itself, which if you see it you will realize is a little scary. Amazing reviews for an amazing movie. I can't wait to see where it stands as far as awards for 2010 go.

The Claim: 3-D Movies Can Induce Headaches and Sickness

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/09/health/09really.html?ref=movies

Many viewers have complained that the 3-D films such as the box office hit "Avatar" causes them to have headaches, nausea, blurred vision and other symptoms such as motion sickness.

Studies have indicated that the cause of this is unnatural eye movement.

Some experts say that one way to avoid this is to focus on only the parts of the screen that are completely in focus.

My honest opinion is this: people always find something to complain about. It clearly says in the warning label that it could cause motion sickness. Why would you go see it knowing this and then complain. People never cease to amaze me.

Oprah's show about her show

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/02/business/media/02oprah.html?ref=television

Oprah will still be hosting her regular talk show but is now also starring in her own reality show; "Behind the Scenes: Oprah's 25th season".

This new show will prohibit her from appearing on similiar shows that air on the OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) until the show ends in September of 2011.

In this new reality show we will see Oprah behind the scenes. What she does to prepare for her shows and what she does with her spare time.

It is sad that this show has been wanted by audiences for years now but OWN thought this was the most appropriate time to complete their viewers request.

This is such an amazing thing OWN is dong. Oprah is one of the few people on television that portrays a positive atmosphere. She has done so much for women and men all over the world and this is one of the few Reality TV shows I will actually be interested in.

We have so many trashy reality shows that are horrible influences on today's society. So much of what is on reality shows today is extremely negative and teaches kids as well as young teens and even young adults aweful ways to conduct their lives.

Finally someone got it right and is producing a show that will have what I believe will be a positive influence on society.

Avatar V.S. Titanic

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/27/movies/awardsseason/27record.html?ref=movies

James Cameron's science fiction epic "Avatar" has passed his Titanic in sales with a huge helper being the higher priced Imax and 3-D ticket prices. Avatar like many other contemporary films are benefiting from the increased price of tickets over the years.

Today's average ticket price is $7.46 a major increase from the average price of $4.69 in 1998 when Titanic hit the theaters- meaning that "Titanic" had to sell many more tickets to reach box office totals like Avatar's. They predict "Avatar" will continue holding a place in the box office for weeks if not months to come.

"In just 39 days it has eclipsed the worldwide record," said Paul Dergarabedian, the president of Hollywood.com's box office division. "Thats extraordinarily impressive."

Dergarabedian expected Avatar to surpass the box office mark set by Titanic by the middle of next week. He expects the sales to reach $2 billion by the end of its run.

Fox said 72 percent of worldwide sales for “Avatar” came from 3-D screens. My question for you is do you think we should be comparing "Avatar" with "Titanic" when the ticket prices have increased by almost %50. How can they compare all the statistics when the variables aren't the same?

Obama's Education Grant Program Emerges

www.nytimes.com/2010/01/19/education/19educ.html?ref=us

The Obama administration’s main school improvement initiative has triggered education policy changes in states across the nation, but it is meeting with some last-minute resistance as the first deadline for applications arrives on Tuesday.

Thousands of school districts all over the us have declined to participate and some teachers unions recommended that their local units not sign on to their states applications.

Still about 40 states were rushing to complete their application. The last minute opposition is unlikely to derail efforts by most of those states to win some of the federal money.

Many have acknowledged that part of this program could be helpful but only part and not enough of it to make them sign on.

My understanding after reading all the details of this article is that Obama is only giving out money to schools who "win". I believe that the money if its even there to give should be distributed evenly by where they stand accademically. Why should everyone have to "apply" when schools all over the U.S.A are education all of the America's "future". Everyone deserves the same ammount of help and some say that they have been able to get help without spending a penny.

A "penny" for your thoughts as to what you think is right in this situation regarding Obama's Education Grant Program?
